Salute to Animation

We want to focus on the studios and legends that created our childhood favorites....... the cartoons!!!! Without cartoons.... where would we be??

For a look at the Animation Legends and it's history, see our article on History of Animation.

By 1930, animated cartoons were an expected part of standard movie going. Depression-era audiences felt cheated if, in addition to the feature film, they didn't see a cartoon, a newsreel, short comedy, and quite often a travelogue, serial chapter or a musical short subject.

The cartoon was a regular part of movie going experiences until the mid 1960s. But since 1930 and earlier, EVERY major film studio had aligned itself with an animation studio or had created its own in-house animation studio.

Here are the major film distributors and their animation suppliers:

20th Century Fox - used Terry -toons

Columbia - used Screen Gems which was Winkler

MGM - used in-house

Paramount - used Fleischer Studios

RKO - used Disney Studios

Universal - used Walter Lantz

Warner Brothers - used in-house headed by Leon Schlesinger
