Daiei - 1942-1971 - president was Masaichi Nagata  - formed in 1942, when the Japanese government consolidated the production studios of Shinko, Daito, and Nikkatsu (Nikkatsu remained as an independent distribution company only).Three most successful films, Kurosawa Akira’s Rashomon (1950), which won the Grand Prize at the 1951 Venice Film Festival; Ugetsu monogatari (1953), directed by Mizoguchi Kenji; and Gate of Hell (1953–54), the first Japanese film to use colour, eased the company’s financial difficulties.; went bancrupt in 1971; revived in 1974 and finally closed in 2003

Shintoho - 1947-1960s -
then revived - the studio formed from a labor strike at Toho in 1946 when 10 of Toho’s directors and top actors led hundreds of employees to form their own union. After negotiations, Toho gave the strikers old, unused studio grounds which were renamed Shintoho (New Toho).

Yokota & Co. - 1902-1912 - founded in Kyoto Japan and was the first dominant film studio - expande to documentaries during the Russo-Japanese War - merged with Yoshizawa & Co, M-Pathe, Hukuhou-do to form Nihon Katsudo Film, Inc., which was known as Nikkatsu.

Yokota Bros. & Co.
- 1901-1902 - founded by Masunosuke and Einosuke Yokota in Kyoto, Japan - imported Lumiere films and did travelling shows around Japan - 1902, Masunosuke left the business and the name was changed to Yokota & Co.
