About Military Posters
This
site is dedicated to the research and archival of propaganda war/military
posters released by countries throughout the world during wars.
The most significant number of these posters were printed during
World War I and World War II.
These propaganda posters played a significant
role in each country's war effort. They were used to anger, recruit,
train, teach, guide, alert and motivate large masses. Before the
introduction of the television, citizens received their news through
two primary media -- the radio and the written word. Radio and
newspapers were used to report the news, reaching the ears and
eyes of the people. Posters were used to go one step further --
to touch the heart and spirit of its citizens.
These
propaganda posters reached EVERYONE, in one way or another. It
inspired our young men and women to join the armed forces. It
called for doctors, nurses, architects and other professionals
to assist both in the U.S. and in the war zones. Citizens were
asked
to conserve necessary supplies such as rubber; housewives did
their part by preserving and conserving food; farmers kept their
fields producing; factories produced massive amounts of supplies
for our troops; financial support was sort via war bonds; and
even our allies were asked to give their support. Since major
wars affect EVERYONE -- EVERYONE is needed to win. These posters
played an enormous role in keeping the country behind its leaders
and its fighting men and women.
Regardless of the country issuing it, the posters
always addressed the same concerns. Here are examples of four
recruitment posters from around the world:
