Civil Defense Posters

While the troops were away, civilians had to take the reins and cover a lot of areas to protect the homefront. The U.S. government set up a civil-defense system to protect the country from attack.

Although not one airplane of the Axis was ever within combat range of the U.S., every American town had Civilian Defense volunteers. Air raid wardens enforced unnecessary blackouts while spotters scanned the skies for hostile aircraft.

Of course, not one of the 1.5 million spotters ever saw an enemy plane, but the ever present volunteers were there just in case.
