AWARDS

Awards posters are those that contain an indication somewhere on the body of the poster that the movie has either been nominated for or given a prestigious industry award. In most cases, the awards posters are one sheet size; however, movie studios have released awards materials in other standard sizes.

It is common practice for a movie studio to reissue (rerelease) a film that has completed its initial showing if it receives an American movie industry award, such as an Academy Award or Golden Globe Award. When this happens, the studios generally issue a new set of advertising materials, and these new materials will contain some reference to the particular award won. In cases where the movie is still in theatres, studios will pull all original materials off the market and release new ones with the awards notation.

In either case, the new movie posters will contain notations such as:

"Academy Award Winner,"

"Nominated for 8 Academy Awards," or

"Golden Globe's Best Picture Award," etc.

Since these awards are usually given to films after they are released to the American theatres, any materials containing an awards reference that are rereleased to the theatres are considered to collectors to be reissues/rereleases and not original movie paper. The poster's original artwork usually has to be changed or reduced in order to accommodate the award proclamation.

There are cases, however, that a poster may contain a notation of an award and be an original issue. This occurs, for example, when an American movie is first introduced to a foreign film festival, such as the Cannes Film Festival in France. If the movie has not already been released to the American market and has won such an award, the original American advertising materials may contain a slogan or symbol indicating that it has won a foreign award. These materials are considered to be original and command top dollar as such.

To decide if an awards poster is an original or reissue/rerelease, consider the following:

Was the award given after the movie's release to the theatres?

Was the movie exhibited at a foreign film festival before it was released to theatres?

In short, if the movie received the award before it was released to the market and before advertising materials were issued, then the movie poster containing the awards notation is considered to be an original. If the award is given after the movie's release to the theatres, even though it may still have been showing in theatres, the new movie materials are considered reissues/rereleases.

EXCEPTION: If a film receives a "smaller' industry award (not as prestigious as other awards), the studios may choose not to reissue new materials, but instead issue a sticker" that can be placed over the regular movie materials.

AS A COLLECTIBLE

Awards posters are considered collectible movie art, particularly those from classic films. If the poster is not an original issue and movie materials were pulled from the market in order to reissue new "award" noted materials, then the original "unmarked" posters will have greater value to collectors since fewer remained on the market. If the "awards" poster is the original issue, then its value will be determined by market demand.
