Tarzan

Following the success of the appearance of the story "Tarzan of the Apes" in the October, 1912 All-Story Magazine, and the first edition of the book in 1914, a Chicago life insurance salesman named Bill Parsons bought the rights to bring Edgar Rice Burroughs' book to the screen. Parsons wanted the film to be realistic but couldn't afford to actually film in Africa, so he set up production in the jungles of Morgan City, Louisiana.

Five weeks after production began, Stellan Windrow, the actor chosen to portray Tarzan was called to active duty for World War I. (shown on the left)

At the last minute, a relatively unknown character actor who had played small parts in D.W. Griffith films, was brought from Los Angeles to Louisiana, where production resumed. His name was Elmo Lincoln.

Lincoln was shorter and stockier than Winslow and had trouble doing the sequences in the trees so they kept the footage shot of Windrow. The studio offered Windrow $1000 for a release so he wouldn't be credited in the film.

You'll notice in the film, the thinner Tarzan swinging in the trees. Also, the first third of the movie is Tarzan as a child played by Gordon Griffith making Elmo Lincoln actually 3rd in line even though he is credited as the FIRST Tarzan.

We have hundreds of posters from around the world in our database so we've broken the lists in several ways to try to help you find what you're looking for.

Below is the list of English speaking titles. For the original releases made in other languages, click here. They are also listed in order of their release.

We have also made a separate listing of the Stars with a little more info on each.
