Australian Artists

Instead of being controlled by the studio, Australian artists seemed to be more influenced by the films distributors or the printers. This creates a completely different philosophy to the artwork. Combine this with the size of the daybill, which is the primary advertising piece, and it quite often creates some unusual results. We do see some signs of studio influence on the distributors. You'll notice that a lot of the posters are rearranged versions of the studio released posters.

Some artist were contracted by the distributors, but the majority were done by the printers, which quite often would maintain inhouse artwork capabilities.

Unfortunately, very few Australian artists signed their work. Below we have listed artists that we have found that have worked in house and have individual listings when we can find any type of signature.

In House Artists

ROBERT BURTON Printers
see Australian Printers

Robert Burton was the inhouse artist and provided artwork for many of the distributors. Also known for reprinting posters for the distributors. Burton employed Babs McDougall

MONTGOMERY CAMPBELL STUDIO

CINESOUND PRODUCTIONS

Cinesound was a distributor that contracted with numerous artists, which included commercial artists Walter Jardine and Frank Tyler.

JOHN RICHARDSON

John Richardson Studio was the most well known poster artist in Australia. Richardson started around 1920. John Richardson did the artwork, primarily for Paramount and Allied Artists (which was distributed by Paramount). Richardson normally sent artwork to other printers but occasionally did the printing also.

We have tried to divide these by documenting when the Richardson Studio is the only listing on the poster and when they are listed in addition to another printer.

After his death, it's rumored that the artwork was primarily done by Robert Burton.
