In 1948, MGM purchased the old Amalgamated
Studios and the 120 acres located at Elstree.
MGM expanded the facilities and turned MGM-British
into one of the most lavish studios in the UK.
MGM turned out dozens of major hits from
2001: A Space Odyssey to Where Eagles Dare. As production costs rose and
the industry changed, MGM decided to stop operations in 1970.
MGM-British was sold and a cold storage
plant used the facilities until it was divided and made into housing projects.
