In the UK, film studios (the buildings), quite often
are considered completely separate from the production companies. You
will notice that the earliest studios in the UK were set up just like
their counterparts in the US, but the difference came with World War I.
Most studios were confiscated by the government during the war and used
for a wide variety of uses from making military training tapes and propaganda
films, warehouse storage, government offices and some even used to store
prisoners.
After the war, when the studios were turned back
over to the private sector, sometimes the original production company
was there to start over..... and sometimes they weren't and a different
production company would take over the studios. British film studios,
quite often, took on a life of their own.
This same procedure happened again for World War
II, thus creating more of a separation between studios and production
